J'ai pas le courage de traduire, trouvé sur les fofo anglais, trés interessant

"Trolls are like rocks: no matter where you go, you'll find some there.”
~ Brann Bronzebeard, Explorers Guild of Ironforge ~

General History
16,000 years ago trolls ruled most of the ancient continent of Kalimdor, and created two great empires: the Amani and the Gurubashi. The Amani ruled the middle forestlands while the Gurubashi ruled the southeastern jungles and deserts from what is now Stranglethorn Vale and Tanaris. Although they weren't friendly to one another, they shared a common hatred for the Azj'Aqir. These intelligent insectoids ruled the lands of the far west and held an empire that stretched from modern southern Kalimdor to Northrend. For hundreds of years, the troll empires waged war upon the insectoids and although they were never able to defeat them, they managed to split them into two factions, the Nerubians of Azjol'Nerub in the north and the Qiraji of Ahn'Qiraj to the south. The Nerubians eventually faced the Lich King in Northrend, and the Qiraji fought the night elves in Silithus after the Sundering.

With the insectoids driven into exile, the Trolls turned inward and kept within their Empires for many years. There, the Gurubashi practiced their tradition of worshiping the snake, the reason for that remains unknown. But then came the day that a small group of Amani broke ties with the Empire and ventured into the dark heartlands of the continent. It was there that the Well of Eternity spread it's powers over the world and when the group settled on the shores of the Well, the cosmic powers began to affect the humanoids. They grew immensely strong, wise and virtually immortal. These transformed humanoids called themselves The Kaldorei, and are referred to as Night Elves today. Wielding fierce magics, the Night Elves quickly expanded their newfound Empire. Not much later the Night Elves systematically dismantled the Trolls defenses and supply systems and both the Amani and the Gurubashi Empire fell to the bloodthirsty Night Elves soon after. The reckless use of magic by the Night Elves lured the Burning Legion to the world and started the War of Ancients. Although there are no records of Trolls fighting the Burning Legion, it's likely there were some skirmishes across the continent. At the end of that war the Well of Eternity imploded, creating two separate continents, now known as the Eastern Kingdoms and Kalimdor. That event is now known as The Great Sundering.

The centuries after The Great Sundering were troublesome times for the Troll tribes. Famine and terror drove the Gurubashi under the sway of the dark god Hakkar the Soulflayer. He gave his secrets of blood to the Gurubashi and helped them reconquer much of Stranglethorn Vale and the islands of the South Seas. But then Hakkar wanted something in return; he demanded many souls to be sacrificed to him daily. When the Gurubashi found out the true nature of their new ally they turned against him and his loyal priests; the Atal'ai. The Uprising had begun. The Gurubashi Empire was shattered by the magic unleashed between Hakkar and his rebel children. The Troll eventually succeeded in destroying Hakkar's Avatar, banishing him from the world. After that, the Atal'ai were no longer allowed to live in the capital city of Zul'Gurub and were sent to the swamplands in the north. That's were they build their own city, the Temple of Atal'Hakkar, and continued their work for their master. The rest of the Gurubashi tribes went their own ways after The Uprising left most of the Empire in ruins, the Skullsplitter, Bloodscalp and Darkspear tribes set off to claim their own lands within the jungles of Stranglethorn.

Meanwhile the Amani waged war on the High Elves that had settled on an ancient troll city in Quel'Thalas that the trolls still held to be sacred. Although initially defeated, they plotted and schemed in the depths of the forests and waited for the numbers of their war bands to grow. Finally, a mighty troll army charged out from the shadowy forests and once again laid siege to the shining spires of Quel'Thalas. The elves found an ally in the tribal humans and the united elf and human armies clashed against the overwhelming troll war bands at the foot of the Alterac Mountains. The elven lords deemed that the time had come to release the powers of their magic upon the enemy. The magi and sorcerers called down the fury of the heavens and set the troll armies ablaze. As the troll armies broke and attempted to flee, the human/elven armies ran them down and slaughtered every last one of their soldiers. The trolls would never fully recover from their defeat, and history would never see the trolls rise as one nation again.

In addition to the Forest and Jungle trolls that inhabited the Eastern Kingdoms after the world's sundering, there exists two (three according to certain Dalaran scholar) more troll species: the Ice trolls and the Dark trolls. Little is known about their history, but they are both bigger and more barbaric than their 'civilized' cousins. The dark trolls could be remnants of those trolls who survived on the night elven territory during the elven reign before the War of the Ancients and have lived in the Kalimdor woods ever since. They are the biggest and most vicious of all troll species, followed closely by the ice trolls who can now be found almost exclusively in Northrend.

Primal Gods
Trolls often call out to so called Primal Gods who they believe can aid them in their lives. These Gods are represented by their High Priests, or Champions. The format of the following list is: Loa God (location) - High Priest (location)

Hir'eek the Bat (unknown) - High Priestess Jeklik (Zul'Gurub)
Bethekk the Panther (unknown) - High Priestess Arlokk (Zul'Gurub)
Ula-tek the Snake (Zul'Aman) - High Priest Venoxis (Zul'Gurub)
Shadra the Spider (Hinterlands) - High Priestess Mar'li (Zul'Gurub)
Shirvallah the Tiger (unknown)- High Priestess Thekal (Zul'Gurub)

Other, minor, Loa Gods include:

Dambala - God of Serpents
Legba - God of Speed
Lukou - Goddess of Healing
Mueh'zala - God of Death
Ogoun - God of War
Samedi - God of the restful sleep of the dead
Shango - God of Storms
Zanza - God of the Zandalar Tribe

Modern Day Tribes

Name: Amani
Location: Zul'Aman (Capital: The Shrine of Ula-Tek), Eastern Kingdoms
Leader: Warlord Jin'zakk.
Appearance: Green skinned.
History: Ruins and stepped pyramids remain from the days of Zul'Amans empire. These trolls used to control a vast part of Lordaeron and called their empire Zul'Aman. What the other races now refer to as Zul'Aman was in that time their center of power and is the only part that remains of the once great Empire. The trolls here are extremely violent when protecting their lands since the High Elves and Humans almost drove them to extinction and there is not much they have left. Interesting to note is that the Troll woman here are also considered to be skilled hunters.

Name: Atal'ai
Location: Temple of Atal'Hakkar, Swamp of Sorrows, Eastern Kingdoms
Leader: Jammal'an the Prophet
Appearance: Green/white skinned with green/purple/white hair
History: After The Uprising, the Atal'ai were exiled to the Swamp of Sorrows where they build the Temple of Atal'Hakkar to continue serving their master Hakkar. They believe that the summoning of the god Hakkar will bring them immortality. The temple was destroyed by the green dragonflight of the dragon Aspect Ysera, but the green dragons guarding the sunken temple were soon corrupted.

Name: Bloodscalp
Location: Zul'Kunda, Stranglethorn Vale, Eastern Kingdoms
Leader: Gan'zulah
Appearance: Blue skinned with red hair
History: After The Uprising, they cut ties with the Gurubashi Empire and the Bloodscalp have since occupied the northern ruins in the jungle just south of the mountains separating Stranglethorn Vale from the human lands of Westfall. They guard the, in their eyes sacred, crystals in the hillside from goblins with an amazing devotion. Ambassadors of the tribe have been seen pledging their allegiance to Jin'do the Hexxer in Zul'Gurub.

Name: Darkspear
Location: Sen'jin Village, Durotar, Kalimdor & Shadowprey Village, Desolace, Kalimdor
Leader: Shadowhunter Vol'jin
Appearance: Blue skinned
History: After The Uprising, they cut ties with the Gurubashi Empire and settled on the shores of Stranglethorn Vale. Their settlements were overrun by murlocs and their fate seemed sealed until the Orcish War chief Thrall saved them. They swore allegiance to Thralls Horde and now find their home in Sen'jin Village, Durotar.

Name: Drakkari
Location: Zul’Drak (Capital: Gandrak), Northrend
Leader: Frost King Malakk
Appearance: White/Blueish skin with white/blue hair
History: The Drakkari lived in Northrend even before The Sundering and never left. It's unsure if these trolls were forest and jungle trolls travelling north, or if the forest and jungle trolls are Drakkari trolls travelling south. The furbolgs have fought the Drakkari for many years, but never managed to defeat them, possibly because these trolls are larger, bigger and more cruel than any other tribe in the world. One of their more important outposts, Drak’Tharon Keep, has fallen to the ever expanding Scourge.

Name: Frostmane
Location: Frostmane Hold, Dun Morogh, Eastern Kingdoms
Leader: Great Father Arctikus
Appearance: White/Blueish skin with white/blue/green hair.
History: The Trolls that lived in the mountains of Dun Morogh were driven out by the Dwarfs when those small humanoids decided to conquer the outside lands. During the recent trogg infestation, the Trolls took their opportunity to strike at the dwarfs once more.

Name: Gurubashi
Location: Zul'Gurub, Stranglethorn Vale, Eastern Kingdoms
Leader: unknown
Appearance: Blue skinned with yellow/green hair
History: The beginning of the great Gurubashi civilization lay in Stranglethorn's far eastern reaches. Few trolls live here now; only those Gurubashi who research and wish to preserve the ruins from the encroaching jungle. Or so it seemed for years on end. The truth is more sinister.

Name: Mossflayer
Location: Eastern Plaguelands
Leader: unknown
Appearance: Green skin with green/blue hair
History: Most probably a group of Amani, cut off from the rest of the Empire when the Scourge invaded the lands now known as The Plaguelands.

Name: Revantusk
Location: Revantusk Village, The Hinterlands, Eastern Kingdoms
Leader: Zul'jin (he is missing in action)
Appearance: Green skinned with green/yellow/white/red hair
History: This relatives to the Amani have constructed a well fortified village on the coast of The Hinterlands. They seem to have some contact with the Darkspear as they are an ally of the Horde. Their relation with the other Forest Trolls of the Hinterlands is mostly in the form of conflict.

Name: Sandfury
Location: Zul'Farrak, Tanaris, Kalimdor
Leader: Chief Ukorz Sandscalp
Appearance: White/Pink skin with red/purple/dark blue hair
History: The Sandfury trolls are known for their ruthlessness and dark mysticism. The desert of Tanaris was once part of the Gurubashi Empire, and the modern city of Zul'Farrak is most likely build atop a Gurubashi ruin. Ambassadors of the tribe have been seen pledging their allegiance to Jin'do the Hexxer in Zul'Gurub.

Name: Skullsplitter
Location: Zul'Mamwe, Stranglethorn Vale, Eastern Kingdoms
Leader: Ana'thek the Cruel
Appearance: Blue skinned with dark blue hair
History: After The Uprising, they cut ties with the Gurubashi Empire and settled in the ruins of Zul'Mamwe. These ruins are in the middle of the jungle, far away from the main road and directly south of Murky Depths Lake. They live a very solitary life and devote a lot of their time to building structures to fit their growing population. Ambassadors of the tribe have been seen pledging their allegiance to Jin'do the Hexxer in Zul'Gurub.

Name: Smolderthorn
Location: Blackrock Spire, Blackrock Mountain, Eastern Kingdoms
Leader: War Master Voone
Appearance: -
History: -

Name: Vilebranch
Location: The Hinterlands (Capital: Jintha'Alor), Eastern Kingdoms
Leader: Vile Priestess Hexx and her Aman'zasi elite guard
Appearance: Green skinned with green/yellow/white/red hair
History: Most probably a group of Amani, cut off from the rest of the Empire when the Amani left the woods to settle in Quel'Thalas. The Vile Priestess Hexx is said to sacrifice people to the Blood God. Ambassadors of the tribe have been seen pledging their allegiance to Jin'do the Hexxer in Zul'Gurub.

Name: Witherbark
Location: The Hinterlands (Capital: Shadra'Alor), Eastern Kingdoms
Leader: unknown
Appearance: Green skinned with yellow/dark blue hair
History: A group of Amani, cut off from the rest of the Empire when the Amani left the woods to settle in Quel'Thalas. Ambassadors of the tribe have been seen pledging their allegiance to Jin'do the Hexxer in Zul'Gurub.

Name: Zandalar
Location: Zandalar (Capital: Zuldazar), South Seas
Leader: King Rastakhan
Appearance: Pale/red skin with red/purple/dark blue hair
History: Zandalar is a large island south of the Broken Isles. Zandalar was one of the first, if not the first, permanent strongholds that the trolls established. All trolls, from jungle to ice, consider Zandalar their homeland. It is neutral territory and trolls don’t battle when on Zandalar.

The Zandalar Conference
Every 6 years, trolls from all tribes gather in Zandalar to discuss matters that affect all trolls. They meet in the capital city, Zuldazar, where King Rastakhan rules. Despire his efforts though, trolls often have trouble working with each other.

Tips for character creation in WoW

Sub-races
There are 5 known types of Trolls:
- Forest Trolls: The Amani Empire, living in the northern mountain forests of the Hinterlands and Quel'Thalas.
- Jungle Trolls: The Gurubashi Empire and it's break-away tribes like the Bloodscalp and Darkspear.
- Dark Trolls: Dark skinned version, never held an empire.
- Ice Trolls: White skinned ones, held cities in Dun Morogh (Frostmane Tribe) and Northrend.
- Desert Trolls: The Sandfury Tribe and the Troll in Zul'Farrak live in the desert wastelands of Tanaris.

The Bloodscalp are the only tribe with one hair color, red. But it seems that there are in fact some restrictions to the colors of hair in each tribe.
For more information about skin color and hair colors, see the list of modern day tribes in the post above.

Age, aging and death.
Jungle Trolls are among the shortest living humanoid races on Azeroth.
Middle age: 30 years / Old age: 47 years / Venerable age: 69 years
After reaching venerable age, almost all trolls die within 10 years.

Social structure and language
Males control everything; females only exist to make more trolls. Each tribe includes a chieftain, who is either the most powerful warrior in the tribe or the most accomplished witch doctor. He leads his soldiers in raids against other creatures. The tribe also includes one or more witch doctors who assist the chieftain with advice and spells.

Burial rites vary from place to place; there are troll graves in Zul'Farrak, and mummies in the temple of Atal'Hakkar. Certain tribes are known to practice cannibalism, though the Darkspears have given all that up after they joined Thrall's Horde.

Trolls marry like any other race would, however it is unknown if that is a 'normal' turn of events or only happens in the higher parts of a tribe. Females, and maybe males too, wear a wedding nose-ring to show their commitment to each other. The actual wedding ritual remains unknown.

Trolls of all types speak Zandali, which is descended from their ancestral tongue, though some have descended so far into barbarism that they have forgotten this language.

Relations within the Troll race
The southern Amani tribes seem to be fairly peaceful to one another, mostly shown by the fact that the Vilebranch and Witherbark live close together in The Hinterlands. The Revantusk however, do not speak kindly of the Vilebranch at all since they are often the victim of nightly raids. It is said that they will offer a grand reward for anyone who brings them the head of Vile Priestess Hexx. The trolls that still live in Quel'Thalas are extremely violent against anyone not of their tribe, they have seen too much defeat, too much disappointment in their allies to trust others (ever) again.

The Gurubashi tribes have suffered a Civil War so there is some tension between the remaining tribes. The Gurubashi have withdrawn to their sacred city of Zul'Gurub and hardly venture outside today. The Bloodscalp and Skullsplitter live in the more open ruins in Stranglethorn Vale and though they are both enemies of the Darkspear tribe there there are no reports of them attacking eachother. The Darkspear have left the jungles of Stranglethorn to settle in Durotar where they lack communication with other Troll tribes. Other trolls who live do not have regular contact with other trolls are the Zandalar, Atal'ai and Sandfury tribes.

Relations with other races
The Troll are all born with a seething hatred for all other races, but there are some differences. The Darkspear have joined the Orcish Horde after Thrall saved them from rampaging Murloc-tribes, but they care little for the other races of the Horde, the Tauren and the Forsaken.

The Zul'Farrak are perhaps the most violent of all, as they are known for their ruthlessness and dark mysticism. The only tribe that shares a similar level of dark mysticism is the Atal'ai, who live inside their temple in the Swamp of Sorrows. But since they never venture outside, their aggression is strictly defensive by nature.

The Amani have a long history of war with the High Elves and Human city-states, and because of that they are particularly aggressive to those races. During the second war, the Forest Trolls joined forces with the Horde as the Orcs promised them vengeance against Lordaeron and Quel'Thalas. However, the Orcs could not approve the savagery and the alliance was quickly broken. The trolls hate the orcs too now, as they feel betrayed by the green creatures.

Stranglethorn Vale Troll Legends

Moon over the Vale

A Moon over the Vale shines,
Casting its glow upon the jungle,
Where proud Warriors heed the call,
To defend our Nation and sacred grounds.

A Moon over the Vale shines,
Far above the cries of battle,
Where blood is spilled,
Of foe and comrade alike.

And when our brethren pass,
Into realms beyond the known,
The soul-spirit hardens,
Deep beneath the Vale.

And when our brethren pass,
Into the Mountain's temple,
We shall protect their eternal spirit,
Encased within the holy blue crystal.

And when our brethren pass,
A Moon over the Vale shines.

Fall of Gurubashi

Rising from the ocean, a tower of water, Neptulon sent the great Krakken to doomed I'lalai. So huge were their forms that jungles of kelp swayed through their limbs, and leviathans swam through bodies. The largest Krakken then raised his arms high and crashed them into the sea, sending waves about him. And they raged toward I'lalai. The Krakken roared, and their voices thundered like an ocean storm: "We come."

Min'loth, standing firm, called forth his magic. The waves sent to I'lilai parted and washed to both sides, and they flooded the jungle beyond. Min'loth then bade his minion chant spells of binding, and a din rang out as dozens of troll voices rose. And one voice rose above the rest. Min'loth bellowed and his magic gathered the power of his minion's spells, and he cast it at the approaching Krakken. The seas parted and Min'loth's spell sped towards the servants of Neptulan. Lightning tore the sky and the spell struck them, and a thousand bolts fell, boiling water and burning craters in the earth. Min'loth cried in triumph, knowing his spell would fell the great beasts.

But the Krakken are old, very old. They remembered when the land was first born from the sea. They remembered when the Old Ones ruled and when the Travelers came and cast them down. They remembered when magic was new. They are old and they hold many secrets. And though Min'loth's spell was strong, it, like the troll, was mortal. And so it failed. It failed to bind the Krakken, but it enraged them. Not in eons had a mortal caused them pain, and the troll's spell was painful.

And so they shed the bindings of Min'loth's spell, but then roared and struck with fury. A rumble was heard as the great waves rose from the deep and raced toward the land. When they reached I'lalai they cast a shadow on the city. But before they destroyed it the Krakken halted, poised. The troll witchdoctors trembled and cried out to their master. Min'loth gazed at the mountains of the sea, doomed and defiant. He turned to his adepts and whispered, and the trolls etched his words into stone. Min'loth then faced the looming Krakken. He grimaced and hurled his staff, his last bold act.

The Krakken then bent their fury upon Min'loth, and an ocean fell upon I'lalai. And it was no more. And then the waters fell upon the jungle, washing clean all they met. Trolls and beasts cried out as the waters smashed and drowned them. Many Gurubashi wondered why the ocean swallowed them, but then they died and knew nothing. And finally, when the waters reached the mountains, they stopped. Appeased, they retreated back beyond the shores, and they left a wake of death.

They retreated, but they surged around I'lalai and remained, drowning it forever. And the chief Var'gazul, safe behind the mountains in Zul'Gurub, went out to the jungle and found it washed clean of his people. And he despaired, for his dreams of conquest were thwarted. And never was Min'loth the Serpent found.

"The Stone of the Tides"
Human surveys of the Troll ruins in Stranglethorn Vale have shown many references to an object named “The Stone of the Tides”. The Gurubashi Trolls have always had a special relationship with the water, which surrounded their Empire on three sides, but this is something different. It is believed that the bearer of the Stone could control water in all it's forms, the reason for this might be that the Stone is a physical form of the Water lord that rules the seas. The reason this mighty Elemental was “trapped” inside the Stone remains unknown.

The first Troll to find the Stone of the Tides, was a Warrior that was patrolling the coast of Stranglethorn Vale. He found the mysterious blue stone lying in the sand. He picked it up and continued his journey. Soon after, he discovered that the Stone had given him the power to control the element of Water and that he was able to summon forth mighty Water Elementals, something only the most powerful mages of the Kirin Tor had been able to do before. Upon returning to Zul'Gurub, the Warrior went to see the Emperor who was so amazed by the powers of the Stone that he renamed the Warrior “Tidebearer”. In the first years, the Tidebearer used his powers to protect the other Gurubashi Warriors and to control the flow of water in Stranglethorn Vale to the benefit of the Gurubashi Empire. But after a while, the Tidebearer became more reclusive and he tended to spend more and more time away from court. He was hiding something from the court, as it turned out that the Stone who had given him so much power had also cursed him and with each coming and going of the tides, the Tidebearer slowly faded away. Then, in his dying days, he traveled back to the sandy beach where he had found the Stone and walked into the sea, never to return. The Stone was not seen again until generations later, and the ritual repeated itself, from the coming of the Stone with the tide, to the disappearing of the Tidebearer into the sea. This process continued for generations and it's believed that it is still happening today. The reason for this remains, as said, unknown.
